Omegle Text Chat, and What Came After

5 min read

Omegle started as text in 2009. Video arrived a year later and took the attention. When the site closed, the text half was the part nobody replaced.

Plenty of people used Omegle for years and never once turned on a camera. The text box was the whole site in 2009, and for a large part of the audience it stayed that way. When Omegle closed on 8 November 2023, almost everything that called itself a replacement opened by asking for camera access. This page is about the other half — what the text mode was, why people miss it, and where that format lives now.

What Omegle's text mode was

It is worth describing precisely, because the thing people miss is quite specific — not "a chat site", but this exact arrangement:
  1. A box, a button, and one stranger. No account, no profile, no history.
  2. It launched in 2009 as the whole site. Video was added in 2010.
  3. "Stranger" and "You" were the only two names in the conversation.
  4. Interest tags were added later, so you could be matched by a word you both typed.
  5. It closed with the rest of the site on 8 November 2023, and has not returned.

Why people chose text

The reasons are practical, and they have not changed since the site closed.
You can do it in a room with other people in it, which covers most of the day for most people.
Nothing about your face, your flat or your background ends up on someone else's screen.
It works on a slow connection and an old phone — typing costs kilobytes, video costs a data plan.
You get a few seconds to think before each sentence, and you can reread it before sending.
What you say matters more than how you look, and that changes who talks to you and about what.

Where text-only chat lives now

Thin pickings, honestly. Most sites that appear in "Omegle alternative" lists are video-first:
  1. Video roulette sites — Emerald Chat, OmeTV, Chatroulette and others — all have text somewhere, but video is the product and the queue is full of people expecting it.
  2. Discord servers give you group text with people who stay. That is a good thing, but it is not a stranger and it is not anonymous for long.
  3. IRC networks are still running and still free. They are public rooms rather than pairs, so the conversation is watched by everyone present.
  4. SayHello is text-only matching between adults, with no camera feature anywhere in the product and no account needed to start.

What it is like here

The parts of Omegle's text mode worth keeping, plus the parts that had to change:
  1. Press a button, get one person. No account needed and no profile to fill in.
  2. Gender and age are asked once, and only if you want to — your partner sees them.
  3. A shared language counts for more than anything else in matching. "Any language" widens the queue when yours is quiet.
  4. Two rooms — Talk and 18+ — with separate queues, so adult subjects stay where they belong.
  5. No bots. That code was deleted from the project on 19 September 2026.
  6. Messages are deleted 24 hours after the chat ends; a reported chat within 30 days, after a person reads it.

Making a text chat work

The difference between a good conversation and forty dead ones is nearly always the opening:
  1. Say something specific. "hi" is a coin toss; a real sentence is not.
  2. One question at a time. Three at once reads like a form.
  3. Give something before you ask for something.
  4. Wait four messages before deciding it is dead. People warm up slowly.
  5. When it is dead, press Next. Nobody is offended and nothing is owed.

Safety, stated plainly

There is no live moderation here and pretending otherwise would be the easiest lie on this page. What exists instead:
  1. Report is next to the message box in every conversation.
  2. Three different people reporting someone within an hour close their search for an hour, in that room only.
  3. Every block says what was closed and for how long, and there is a written appeal.
  4. A reported chat is read by a person — the one case where anyone reads what you wrote.
  5. Never share a name, a town or a workplace, and treat any link in a first message as a bot.

Questions people ask

Is Omegle text chat still available?

No. The whole site closed on 8 November 2023 and there has been no relaunch. Sites using the name today are not connected to the original.

What is the closest thing to it?

Text-only one-to-one matching with no signup. SayHello does that; most of the well-known alternatives are video-first.

Do I need a camera here?

No. There is no video feature at all, so you will never see a camera permission prompt.

Are interest tags available?

No. Matching here uses gender, age and language rather than typed interests.

Is it free?

Yes. A guest gets 5 conversations a day and a free account removes the limit. There is nothing to buy.
